BlogIN, A Blogging Unconference
Changing within your organization
How do you make changes within your organization? I think it is critical to think about the transformation process before doing it. Here some ideas that are taken from the book "Small Business Solutions" by Robert D. Hisrich. By the way, the book is a good quick read but you can probably find it for pennies on Amazon or in the bargain aisle.
- Establish a sense of urgency.
- Form a powerful guiding coalition
- Create a vision of end result
- Communicate a vision
- Select a champion
- Empower others to act on the vision
- Plan for and create short term wins
- Consolidate improvements and produce more changes
- Institutionalize new approaches
What I like most about it is that it is not 7-steps. What is the deal about 7 anyway?

Building a Construction Blog, Lacking content
If you are in the construction field and more specifically home building or real estate look at this all in one page of widgets that you can put on your website or better yet your blog. I think it is interesting how you can use their widgets and obtain local information on the housing market, school or even history of your neighborhood. With these gadgets you provide fresh local content to your readers without doing a thing! That’s nifty!

RISING COSTS, UNCERTAIN DEMAND SQUEEZE NONRESIDENTIAL CONSTRUCTION, AGC SAYS AGC - The Associated General Contractors of America
Look at this report and tell me what does it mean for the small contractor? My take is that larger contractors may be more aggressive on smaller projects this spring!

Marketing System = Equity
As part of my Duct Tape Marketing Kits for Contractors, I offer The E-Myth Contractor by Michael Gerber as a bonus. It is a small paperback book that is an excellent overview of many important topics. If you are unfamiliar with Michel Gerber he preaches a system for everything. My kind of guy!
Long story short, he discusses equity as one of the 4 factors of money in your business. We are all familiar with money, sweat equity and so forth but he makes an excellent case for the systems in your company as a main cog in the equity structure. Is equity the value others place on your business? Is not the single most important value placed on a business is its ability to create future sales? What kind of a marketing system did you say, you had?

CONSTRUCTION FACES TUMULTUOUS YEAR
Latest press release from Construction News..My only comment to add to this is When don't we face a Tumultuous Year?
Press Release Title: CONSTRUCTION FACES TUMULTUOUS YEAR FOR PROJECTS, PRICES, LABOR, SAYS AGC ECONOMIST
Date: March 10, 2008
Las Vegas—Nonresidential construction will experience wide variance in demand, materials cost and labor availability, according to the Construction Inflation Alert released today by the Associated General Contractors of America (AGC).
"In 2008, some nonresidential segments will continue to grow, including power and energy, but others such as lodging will slow or decline," said AGC's Chief Economist Ken Simonson. "Diesel, copper and steel are among materials costs likely to accelerate, while others remain benign."
The large increase in diesel fuel prices compared to a year ago, along with the importance of diesel fuel to highway construction, makes it likely that highway costs will go up even more. Conversely, the slumping demand and rising supply of gypsum products may mean nonresidential and multi–unit residential building costs go up a little less than 6 percent.
"These cross–cutting trends make it likely that the PPI for construction inputs will accelerate from the 4.5 percent rate of increase that prevailed in 2006 and 2007 to a 6–8 percent range by the end of 2008," commented Simonson.
Looking beyond 2008, there are two factors that make it likely that a 6–8 percent growth rate for construction input prices will be sustained. First, many construction inputs, such as diesel fuel, steel and copper are in demand worldwide. Second, construction will always be dependent on physical delivery of heavy, bulky, relatively low–value materials for which transportation and fuel costs are a major part of the delivered price.
Labor accounts for roughly half the cost of a construction project. In 2007, despite the high level of nonresidential activity, contractors were generally able to find enough workers, thanks to a massive redeployment of specialty trade contractors from residential to lighter nonresidential projects.
"In 2008, I expect labor shortages will worsen for a few crafts, pulling average wage rates higher, but in other segments such as residential specialty trades, the supply of some crafts will be plentiful," noted Simonson. "Wage increases in nonresidential construction may rise to the 4.5–5.5 percent range in 2008, despite the slowdown in overall activity, and to 5–6 percent in 2009, when residential work begins to compete again for some specialties."

Business Management on line
I hate to take so much stuff from the Duct Tape Marketing Blog, but when it is important I am afraid many of you might miss this. Interesting online tools
The web app builder Zoho is doing something pretty amazing. It’s building out the complete suite of small business tools online and doing it in the face of proclamations and claims of this vision from Google and Microsoft.
They have successful built tools for online spreadsheets, documents, presentations, databases, web meetings, mail, chat and CRM. This week they announced a nifty little tool called Zoho People. The aim of this tool is to allow businesses (big and small) to move their HR and recruiting online. The basic features include an employee database with management functions, org chart, process and approval maps, and employee portal.
My guess is bookkeeping and shipping can’t be far away.
The Duct Tape Marketing Blog is a permanent fixture on my site, it should be on yours too.
